FIELD was conceived in 2019 by Supermrin, and has evolved into a network of collaborators across the world. At its core is an interdisciplinary, all-womxn team of artists, architects, and designers.

In 2020, a range of grass-based bioplastics were developed in partnership with material researcher Jil Berenblum. These afford FIELD sculptures with unique material properties including translucency, flexibility, moldability, and durability.

FIELD initiated initial robotics research to fabricate with our bioplastics via a residency at the Consortiuum for Research and Robotics at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 2021. Robotics experiments were developed with support from Xenia Adjoubei, director, AdjoubeiScottWhitby Studio.

“Braiding FIELD” is a performance score by artist Jessica Fertonani Cooke. The score has been performed by over 50 artists across the United States, South America, and Europe, including a simultaneous durational performance in Brazil, and Wales in 2022.

FIELD has facilitated workshops at the intersections of art and science, and developed collective artworks with various communities. Past workshops have included collaborations with Guerilla Science, the Beam Center, Pratt Institute, Columbia University, Wavepool Gallery, and others. We often stay in touch with our workshop participants, who sometimes go on to developing their own areas of arts-based research and collaboration.

We are primarily a grassroots collective (no pun intended!) and welcome your support - we are excited to work on new projects, across new spaces and with new communities. Invite us to lead a workshop, or develop a site-specific project. Or reach out to participate in our projects and engage with our communities.
